Mazda Motor Corp. is at the forefront of a huge initiative to help “unite drivers, roads and vehicles in a data network.” Their hopes are to cut down the amount of road fatalities, traffic congestion and accidents with an Intelligent Transport System (ITS). This system will link commuters, traffic sites and accident reports via the internet, while analyzing the state of weather and surface road conditions as each change during the day.

Resulting data can create a “near accident map” available to drivers via on-board navigation, allowing them to probe alternative routes and avoid messy road situations. This information will be passed on to riders with voice prompts, so you will not even have to take your eyes off the road! An example of how this can help avoid close calls on the highway is as followed: A car passing around a semi moves into your lane. The on-board navigation is immediately alerted to the impatient driver, telling you a collision may be imminent. This allows the vehicle operator to avoid other car quickly – at the same time it also alerts the passing vehicle to slide back behind the truck, avoiding any accident.
