Mazda RX-8 To Be Replaced by Furai RX-7

Fans of Mazda’s RX-8 will be sad to discover the Japanese auto makers’ plans as of late. Yes, it is true: RX-8 is going to be replaced by RX-7. Sad? Well don’t be – because rumors tell us the fast and furious Furai concept will be the model for RX-7. It’s an attempt my Mazda to combat Toyota FT-86 and the Hyundai Genesis Coupe. Future RX-7 models will also use a next-gen Renesis 16X rotary engine from their Taiki concept at 2007′s Tokyo Motor Show. The twin-rotor 1600cc Wankel, larger than the current RX-8′s engine, is rumored to be capable of producing nearly 350 HP and 215 lb-ft of torque.

Now don’t expect to see the same Furai concept model used in the production of Mazda’s RX-7. According to sources at Edmunds Inside Line, a “more conventional” design will be implemented for RX-7. RX-8′s replacement was originally slated to appear in 2012, but Edmunds claims you’ll see it as early as 2011.
