A Look Back at Mazda’s Grillz

Since they began producing vehicle the Mazda line has continued a tradition of very expressive front ends & grills on those rides. Classic Mazda’s started with a slight smirk, and futuristic concepts look to be gleaming with joy.

Mazda Cosmo Sport – This 1967 model looks very pleased with itself.

The First Gen Mazda RX-7 has more of a sleepy, cheerful look – kinda reminds us of an anime character.

When the Protege came to America it was time to get serious.

Mazda’s Millenia also decided to toughen up for the customers.

By the last run of the Mazda Protege 5 their vehicles were already starting to smile a bit more.

2008’s Mazda MX-5 loves to grin for the crowd – it may be tiny, but it be fierce!

2010 will be an even happier year, as the cheerful Mazdaspeed 3 takes on all roads with glee.

And what does the future hold for the Japanese auto maker? Happy faces and happy customers.

Mazda Leaves 2008 With Smiles

It was a rough year in the automotive industry. Companies were (and still are) in danger of folding, assembly lines were closed, employees were laid off. But Mazda, with it’s new designs and strong selling cars, continued to smile all throughout 2008 – literally. We’d like to round up the new concepts and upgrades for 2008, 2009, and 2010 from Mazda Motor Corp – because these rides have a reason to look like they’re grinning, and do just that.

Mazda Kiyora Concept Live!

Finally! Mazda dropped their Kiyora concept city car at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. The highly anticipated concept was all the rage at this week’s event – check out more photos and an excerpt from Mazda below.

Mazda Kiyora – The Eco-Friendly City Car
Mazda Kiyora is a small, friendly concept car designed to meet the needs of young urban-ites and indicates the direction Mazda could take with a car this size in the future – especially in terms of technology. It features components that are being developed at Mazda for use in the near future – like a next-generation 1.3-liter DISI engine, a new automatic transmission, and a rigid and lightweight bodyshell for very high fuel efficiency and low emissions. Kiyora’s design supports these technologies with aesthetic features that are expressive of the water theme yet highly functional.

Concept Overload! Mazda MX-5 and 2010 MAZDA3

Recently we brought you official concept drawings of the new MX-5 front end from Mazda. Well it looks like the ~~Miata~~ MX is out of the bag as the Japanese auto maker has “unofficially” released a shot of their revamped MX-5. This re-opt continues MX-5’s mini tradition, providing a great two door sports car, convertible style. The front end, as our early photos suggested, looks more aggressive and less rounded than predecessors.

You’ll be privy to a remodeled grill, along with extended headlights and what looks like a much larger Mazda emblem…in case anyone you pass wonders “what the hell is that magnificent machine?!”

Also making several appearances lately are two different concept drawings of the (supposed) 2010 MAZDA3. Our first glimpse shows a 5-door sedan Nagare design with beautiful curves and a mean looking front end. MAZDA3’s rear is looking more and more like a Yaris every year. Actually, these renderings look more like an extended MAZDA2.

But that’s not the end of our MAZDA3 debate – some other 3 concept photos have appeared online, and these look more production worthy. You won’t have so many fanciful curves, instead there’s a more realistic approach to a 5-door sedan/wagon vehicle. It reminds Mazdapedia of the 5-door Protege of years past, and that makes us very happy. The vehicle should be unveiled officially during November’s Los Angeles Auto Show.

2010 Mazda MX-5 – Leaked Front End Concepts

We fell a little behind on this one – last month the European Union Office of Harmonization for the Internal Market (aka: patent office) “accidentally” leaked photos of Mazda’s MX-5 face lift. Must be frustrating for the design heads at Mazda, but it sure gives car fanatics a tease of what will come by 2010. Aside from a reformatted front end, the Miata is currently going under one final re-branding in North America, to catch up with the rest of the globe. Mazda had asked that dealership websites refer to the car as “MX-5” and discontinue use of “Miata” for new models.

Our first thought when looking at the future of MX-5 is “Oh hai!” as the vehicle’s scrunched front end smiles back at drivers and pedestrians. It looks extremely happy to be out on the road. Bumper and fender design has been curved more, probably to coincide with the Flow drawings and auto show vehicles Mazda has been touting since late 2005. With a more aggressive look it’s bound to catch the eye of new car buyers, separating it from many of the current products emerging from North American car makers. As Mazda Canada president Don Romano stated earlier this week: “I don’t ever see Mazda as being a mainstream company.” Looks like a step in the right direction – can’t wait to see a real life MX-5 model!
